Progressive Overload

The principle of gradually increasing training demands over time to continue stimulating physical adaptation. Without progressive overload, the body has no reason to grow stronger, faster, or more endurance-capable.

1RM (One-Rep Max)

The maximum weight a person can lift for one complete repetition of an exercise with proper form. It serves as a benchmark for programming relative training intensities.

RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion)

A subjective scale used to rate exercise difficulty, typically from 1 (very easy) to 10 (maximal effort). RPE helps exercisers regulate intensity without relying solely on equipment data.

Volume vs. Intensity

Volume refers to the total amount of work performed — commonly calculated as sets × reps × load for strength training, or total distance or time for cardio. Intensity describes how demanding any single effort is, often expressed as a percentage of your one-rep max (1RM) in strength work, or as a heart rate zone in aerobic training.

Progressive Overload

The foundational principle behind almost all fitness adaptation: gradually increasing the demands placed on the body over time — through heavier loads, more reps, shorter rest, or greater frequency — so that the body continues to adapt rather than plateau.

Periodization

A structured approach to varying training stress over defined time blocks (called mesocycles or macrocycles) to optimize performance and recovery. Common models include linear periodization (steadily increasing load) and undulating periodization (varying intensity within shorter cycles).

AMRAP and EMOM
