Mobile Data: Cellular Network Terms Defined
Mobile data refers to internet access delivered through your wireless carrier's cellular network — the signal your phone uses when Wi-Fi isn't available.
5G
The fifth generation of cellular network technology, designed for faster peak download speeds, lower latency, and the ability to handle more connected devices simultaneously compared to 4G LTE. LTE (Long-Term Evolution)

Hotspot

Carrier Aggregation

Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax)

SSID
Service Set Identifier — the name of a Wi-Fi network as it appears in your device's list of available connections. A router can broadcast multiple SSIDs, often one per frequency band.
WPA3
Wi-Fi Protected Access 3, the current standard for Wi-Fi network security encryption. It replaced WPA2 and offers stronger protection against password-guessing attacks.
Bluetooth pairing
The process of establishing a trusted connection between two Bluetooth-enabled devices, such as a phone and wireless headphones. Once paired, devices typically reconnect automatically in the future.
Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE)
A power-efficient version of Bluetooth designed for devices that transmit small amounts of data intermittently, such as fitness trackers, smartwatches, and location tags.
Latency
The time delay between sending a data request and receiving a response, measured in milliseconds. Lower latency is especially noticeable in real-time applications like video calls and online gaming.
Bandwidth
The maximum amount of data that can be transmitted over a connection in a given time. Higher bandwidth supports faster downloads and multiple simultaneous users or devices.
VoLTE (Voice over LTE)
A technology that routes voice calls through the LTE data network rather than older 2G/3G voice channels, resulting in clearer call quality and the ability to use data simultaneously during a call.
When you see multiple bars on your phone's status bar, those indicate signal strength on whichever cellular generation your carrier and device support. Switching between generations (for example, from LTE to 5G) happens automatically based on network availability and your plan.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Terms You'll Encounter
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are both short-to-medium range wireless protocols, but they serve very different purposes. Wi-Fi connects devices to the internet via a router; Bluetooth connects devices directly to each other without a network in between.

Wi-Fi generations are now named numerically (Wi-Fi 5, Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6E, Wi-Fi 7) instead of technical shorthand like 802.11ac. Higher numbers generally support faster speeds and better performance in crowded environments. Bluetooth versions follow a similar pattern — Bluetooth 5.0 and later versions offer significantly longer range and lower power draw compared to older releases.
One useful distinction: dual-band routers broadcast on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies. The 2.4 GHz band travels farther through walls; the 5 GHz band delivers faster speeds at shorter distances. Many modern routers also offer a 6 GHz band (part of the Wi-Fi 6E standard) that is less congested and capable of very high throughput.
Airplane Mode Turns Off All Three
Enabling Airplane Mode on your device disables mobile data, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth simultaneously.
