Resolution describes how many pixels make up an image. 1080p (Full HD) has 1,920 × 1,080 pixels. 4K (Ultra HD) quadruples that to roughly 3,840 × 2,160. The jump is most visible on screens 55 inches and larger, or when you sit closer to the display. 1080p remains perfectly sharp on smaller or more distant screens.

HDR is often more impactful than resolution alone. Where resolution adds detail, HDR expands the range of brightness and color—making sunlit highlights crisp and shadow areas readable at the same time. Audio formats, video codecs, and content-protection standards form the less visible layer of streaming—but they directly affect what you hear, how much bandwidth you use, and whether content plays at all.

Codecs compress video files so they can travel over the internet efficiently. H.264 is the oldest and most widely compatible. H.265 (HEVC) cuts file size roughly in half at equal quality, enabling 4K streaming at practical speeds. AV1, developed by the Alliance for Open Media, compresses even further and is increasingly used by major platforms for high-resolution content.

Dolby Atmos and DTS:X are object-based surround sound formats. Unlike traditional channel-based audio (5.1, 7.1), they define where individual sounds exist in three-dimensional space—including above the listener. Reproducing this effect requires a compatible receiver or soundbar; otherwise the audio plays as a standard downmix.
